Gerland’s bought by another major Houston grocer

Houston-based Gerland Corp., parent company of Food Fair, Food Town and Grand Market, is being purchased this month by Houston-based Grocers Supply Co., a wholesale grocery distributor to chains such as Fiesta Mart Inc.

On the heels of its 52nd anniversary in business, grocer Houston-based Gerland Corp., parent company of Food Fair, Food Town and Grand Market, is being purchased this month by Houston-based Grocers Supply Co., a wholesale grocery distributor to chains such as Fiesta Mart Inc., which it also owns.

The deal will effectively close by end of day June 16, said Dave D’Arezzo, spokesman for Grocers Supply Co.

Financials and terms of the deal were not yet disclosed.

The deal is being signed in the midst of a competitive grocery market. Grocers Supply owns about 15.6 percent of the market share in the Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area, according to grocer industry trade publication The Shelby Report.

Once a higher-profile player in the Houston-area’s grocery scene, Gerland’s Food Town chain now has only about 1.8 percent of the Houston market, according to the report.

Houston-based Fiesta Mart Inc. recently announced its first Sugar Land location will open this year in the Sugar Creek shopping center.

The store, at 13833 Highway 59, will be 41,000 square feet and was previously occupied by a Grand Market, which closed last year.
